If you are looking for a hostess gift we have the perfect thing -
John Derian’s hand made decoupage plate with a pineapple motif. ($49)
In Colonial America pineapples (which were imported from the Caribbean)
were an incredibly rare delicacy and highly prized. The pineapple came to
symbolize hospitality and friendship. It was carved into gateposts,
cast in brass and used in the weather vanes of public buildings
and woven into table linens.
I love the idea of bringing your host or hostess a pineapple
to thank them for their hospitality. And it comes with a bit of trivia
to entertain your hosts!

What a beautiful pineapple! When I was in Savannah, Georgia last year, I was told that pineapples didn’t last very long in the heat, so when someone had received a shipment of pineapples they would put the extra ones on their front porch for friends and neighbors to take home — and that is how the pineapple became the symbol of hospitality. Good luck with your online store and blog (found you via a Swiss Miss posting).
Thanks Jelisava! I have read many stories about why the pineapple became a symbol of hospitality, but I have never heard this one. I love it! Thanks for sharing. Lizzie
