a blog!

abitare definition

Welcome to the first post of our ‘a blog’! We are so excited about this
element of our website because it gives us a chance to share our experiences,
things we love, tips, ideas, and more!

Opening this store is a first for both Joanne and me. From finding
and renovating the space to searching far and wide for merchandise to
dealing with many unexpected bumps in the road (a burst pipe days before
our opening party!) to creating this website, we have learned
so much over the past year. We get asked a lot of questions:
how did you get started? where do you find all of the merchandise for the store?
how do I make the ugly couch my in-laws gave me less noticeable?
what new, cool things do you have in the shop?

In ‘a blog’ we will post about the latest things in the store that we love,
new and exciting designs that we come across in our travels,
tips about decorating, our experiences owning a small business,
and anything else that inspires us.

Joanne is about to start helping her son fix up his new studio apartment
on the Upper East Side and I just moved into a big one bedroom in Cobble Hill
with my boyfriend and am learning (grudgingly) to meld our decorating styles.
We will keep the blog updated with stories and tips from these undertakings.
Also, I have a summer trip to Denmark planned while Joanne is off to
Italy in July and we will come back with lots of great finds. Finally, we want
to know what you are interested in, email us and let us know
what you want to read about!

So far this store has really done wonders for my home entertainment system, and I don’t mean my media system! Now when people come over to eat or drink, I can offer them beautiful hand blown glasses or hand thrown mugs. Lizzie and Joanne have collected the most beautiful assortment of things that make my home feel so beautiful and so unusual…like my little bird bud vase and John Derian decoupage tray…people comment on those all the time. Plus, and this is my favourite thing, they are so helpful and so patient and available to go through what you need– be it a gift for others or for yourself– and help you find just the right thing. Plus being in their store is really good for the mind: somehow it’s so calming in there! Thank you both so much! Brooklyn is so lucky to have you…
